I did some .air file and .cfg editing on a russian VTOL (don't remember what it was exactly) and I found that the thrust direction seemed to be tied with the flaps. in order to get it to point straight down, I changed the flap setting so that they would go just over 90*. The only thing that kept it from working perfectly is that I couldnt add the lift engine. I don't know why, but nothing I did to the engine portions of the files would make it so that the lift engine was placed where it needed to be. This plane had three engines, two had TV nozzels and funtioned as main engines, and the third was smaller and was mounted right behind the cockpit and pointing straight down, but it was only eye candy. The lift engine was not actually included in the .air and .cfg files.

P.S. yeah that was off topic, but we were also talking about VTOLs. I think it's possible, I just don't know how to do it.
