It sure as hell beats using the keyboard to rudder if you're not gonna get pedals though

That's why you get rudder pedals... ;)

Thats true, but personally I would just use Auto rudder if I didn't have my pedals. Basically what it comes down to for joystick choices is, of course, personal preference.

The problem with autorudder is if you have a joystick that's a bit fidgety with the ailerons, you're gonna be all over the place when taxiing (my problem with my logitechs).

Rudder pedals cost mo' money (a good set is in the hundreds), so if you're on a tight budget, your best bet is a twist-handle joystick from Saitek or Micrososft.

Even a simple Saitek game controller ....

I've played with my joystick since about 12 or 13 so I'm quite a pro now and its never been a big fancy one. It doesn't twist though.  :(

I've seen joystics for 20 bucks!  Probably not that great, but I'm sure that they do their job.

I have the CH products yoke and pedals.  I would recomend them, but they're quite expensive.  THe pedals were 100, the yoke was 130. but definately worth it.
