I never like auto land landings.  I just track the ILS with a/p in NAV mode, alt off and control my own desent with the indicator on my NAV 1.  I use my flaps and throttle and some pitch adjustment along the way and at about 100 I disconnect the a/p, flare and viola.

About 'coming in above the glideslope', I'm afraid that it sometimes happens in real life too.  People may care to read this - a Voice Recorder Transcript from an Airbus that crashed at Taipei, Taiwan, in February 1988, killing 196 people.  Notice how many times they IGNORE an instruction to descend to 4,000 feet:-

Tell you what - I'll bet that no-one who reads it through will ever fly China Airlines again......

Couple of tips for the ILS beginner....

Approach the centre line from within 30* of the actual rwy heading. When the Localiser need starts to move you'll have a much less severe turn to make to line up with the runway, and if you're using the AP it won't have too much of a problem getting established.

Always intercept the glideslope from beneath even if you have to maintain a certain height to get there. Never put yourself in a dive to get into the cone!

Good luck!

Daveuk, basically, on a jetliner, the autopilot at the top of the panel lets you set any given course, altitude, rate of climb etc., and it will hold those for you.
