I would say either a King Air 350, or a Learjet... better yet, download a fighter jet!  ;D Personally I find those turbine powered aircraft easier to fly and easier to learn :)

I have the Real Air 172.  Originally for FS 2002 but works well in FS9 also.  As far as going to a single retractible goes, there are excellent freeware 182rg's for download. 2D panels only though, but I personally don't mind 2D if there are interior views also.  Quite frankly, the default aircraft are very simplified versions of their realworld counter parts and save for minor differences in handling and speed and altitude capailities, they aren't that different from one another.  If you have a little cash to spare, you might consider selecting a stable of quality payware planes.  FSD and Caranado make excellent GA aircraft.  So does Fight 1.  And, when you get to the jet stage, forget the default Lear.  Its too much like the default King Air on caffeine.  Go with one of the Eagle Soft biz jets for your jet transition.  And, when you get into airliners, Flight 1, PMDG, Wilco, Captain Sim take your pick.  I would go with a regional jet first at that point though.  Good luck

I would go with something like the Bellanca Super Dekathlon. It may come as a shock to you at first when you try and make a nice and easy turn and the thing rolls on you!, but it's not to hard to fly. From there I really like the Beech Twin Bonanza, which can be found on this site. It's a twin, but not all that hard to fly, and it can land on a really short grass strip even! Then move up to the Beech King Air, and get the feeling of the autopilot. The King Air flies really nice and is not to hard to land! From there, try the Lancair Legacy. It's a high proformance plane capable of some nice aerobatics. And it's a lot harder to land then anything I've told you about yet! Next, you could try the Saab 340, a turboprop passenger plane thats real easy to fly. It's just a lot bigger! From there, start trying to learn jets! They're pretty hard, I'm still learning!!

Good luck!!
