Checking ATIS and weatherreports? That's only possible when you are within 30 nm. of the airport. So, how do you check an ATIS-report for the airport you are going to if it's more than 30 nm. away? Lots of airport don't even have there own ATC.

You're right, most airports aren't towered but lots of them have an ASOS or AWOS.  Along my last route from Canton TX to Jackson MS I checked the AWOS/SOS of servaral airports along the way.  Just because I'm not landing there doesn't mean their automated system can't give me a basic picture of the weather I'm flying in.  The day was as clear as they come but the gusting to 30 winds neccesitated knowing what I was flying into.  FSS will also give you in-transit weather reports if you call and ask for them.

The answer REAL WORLD answer here is to request "Special VFR". A controller can never solicit a pilot to request SVFR, it's prohibited by FAAO 7110.65.

The flollowing restrictions apply , you must have one mile of flight visibility. IFR Aircraft take priority.

Here is the link to the FAA page that lists the actual rule

http://www.faa.gov/ATpubs/ATC/Chp7/atc0705.html

We use this a lot in ATC, especially if you are somewhere where this is fog in the mornings/ evenings. Pilots may only fly SVFR at night if they are IFR qualified and in an IFR equipped aircraft.

THE BIGGEST THING IS , IF YOU ARE ONLY  VFR QUALIFIED  AND INADVERTANTLEY ENTER IMC, DECLARE THE EMERGENCY IMMEDIATLEY!!!!!!!!!

Now in FS2004, ignore the tower and do whatcha want :)

We don't have an FSS in fs, although that'd be nice  :'(
