We're talking about good framerates, good looking graphics, and great absolute stutter free performance.

Actually, here is the text of the origination post under the title "I Want Good FPS With Great Graphics!".......

"Can someone please tell me what is the BEST system to fly with? Best graphics card, best pentium4, ram, sound card, etc?  I've seen some great screen shots and also some great movies from different sites. I know it's possible to run a smooth FS2004 with everything turned to high! I want beautiful clouds, great weather effects, etc!!"

Below are the 8 pages of my settings to define most for you.

Thanks... that clarifies your comments nicely.

Sorry if I stepped on your toes.

best,

Quite frankly,

I don't give a stuff about AI traffic, I just want to fly.

So what I'm about to get should, in theory, be perfect for what I want to do, the only drawback in my new setup should be the graphics card.....  Come on, surely, a 3GHz processor with a resonable card and 1Gig memory should be perfect!

Just remember, this will be used by me, for a few months a best, since, I won't be here at all next year, since I'm finishing school.  I'll hopefully be getting a really good laptop to game on.

And also remember, us Zimbabweans can't afford anything!  I'm living on my parent's expense....  Until next year.  So We can't exactly get the top of the range system, especially since, when Im gone the only thing the computer will be used for will be emailing and word processing!

But thanks for the replies anyway guys.

Greg

Greg, In another thread, it was asked (paraphrasing) what we want in FS2006.  I think the best change, would be to remove the framerate indicator from the sim.  So many are so paranoid about these digits that I don't even think they actually take into account how their sim is performing or how good it looks.  I really don't know how they find time to fly, with all the fiddling with settings and adding expensive hardware.  They strive to achieve two things that are abstract concepts in every aspect of life.........."perfection" and or "the best."  These things can't be attained, ever, because there is always something better, somewhere.  Especially with computer technology, which is changing not every year, month, or day, but every hour.  I think that if you're that obsessed with those framerate numbers, you need to find a more relaxing hobby before you have a stroke or heart attack.  Or if the numbers don't bother you, enjoy flying the way it looks great to you.   Just my humble opinion.

Greg,

I think some of the "confusion" in this thread is that it was actually started by chadw...... with a slightly different focus than maybe you have.  He didn't "just want to fly"... he wanted "the best".

If you don"t care about turning stuff down of course your system will be flyable.  Under those circumstances.... my system is very flyable....and yours will be a bit better in the CPU department....which with this sim is ata least as important as the video card.

best,

My system is

AMD XP 2400+
ASUS A7V266
Sound Blaster Audigy
Raedon 9500 Pro 128DDR
1.25 GB DDR RAM

So it's not exactly nosebleed technology, but using things like FSAutostart and FlightSim Manager helps, as does scanning for spyware and viruses from time to time.

I also made the changes suggested here.

I run with all effects turned to Max and the target frame rate slid to 30 (I really can't percieve anything higher than that), and the AI traffic set to 72%.

I use PAI traffic and getting rid of the default (Soar, Emerald Harbor, etc.) also helped.

I flew into O'Hare with a LET turboprop and got more than acceptable framerates...and with the Lancair Legacy, it was REEAAAL smooth ;D.

So it is possible to play this on an older machine.  I'm waiting to see what the processors do, and especially for PCI express...also for when I have more $$$ ::)

PS  I don't even know how to get those red #s to show at the top, and I only want to fly...

;)   ;)   ;)

So....... I bought this really nice new car the other day.  It has an engine that can develop an awesome scad of horsepower.  Zero to 60 mph in fractions of a second  ;).

Problem is, that I can't run the supercharger on the engine to get all that horsepower it is rated to have.  Turns out, I found out after I bought it that it needs nitro-methane fuel in order for it to function properly.  The readily available high test gas isn't "enough" to run it.  (Too bad the car salesman didn't tell me about that.)  I know that nitro is AVAILABLE.... but you can only really find it at race tracks...... and it is really expensive stuff.

So at the moment... I guess I'll just have to drive around without the turbocharger switched on.  The car still runs OK without it, I guess.  Anyway, the car is just to get me from place to place.  It does that just fine, really.  What's the point of all that extra acceleration, anyway?

A mechanic friend offered to "fix" the issue for me by removing the high-tech turbocharger.......  but I said "no".  Figured some day maybe I could live next to a track and get nitro easily.  Shame to remove that system altogether..... although I know that it could be replaced later any time I wanted.  After all..... I paid for that turbocharger to be there.

Another friend of mine has a turbocharger from another car he says will work on mine even without burning nitro.  He knows people who have already done that with my car.  So I could remove the original and install his old one.  But he said that his unit probably would not develop anywhere near as much horsepower as the original or might even degrade it a little bit.  But at least the turbocharger would actually be running when you drove it, and to the casual observer it would look like a turbocharged car.  I also declined that idea.

Maybe the best solution here is to save up my pennies for buying a big pile of 55 gallon drums of nitro-methane.  Or better yet, a small tank truck.  Until then, I'll just drive my new car without all that horsepower I thought I was buying.

;)    ;)    ;)

best,

Ummm ???

What exactly does this have to do with computers and FS2K4?

I stopped looking at the frames long ago! ;D

I couldn't stand seeing them...  One way or another, it is obvious that at the moment that I get crappy jerking frames in whatever I do.  So there's no point in looking at them, cause I know that it won't help increase them! ::) ;D  It'd just be nice to be able to fly anything, smoothly, it's not so easy flying planes when the computer keeps skipping frames and jerking.....  Enough talk of frames!

Didn't mean to go way off topic....

Greg

P.S.  Don't have any settings on full, let alone 1/10 of full, cause I can't, the comp. can't cope!
