FS2004 global mesh?

Postby xrvjorn » Tue Sep 04, 2007 12:10 pm

I found the global mesh at http://www.simviation.com/fsdterrainsrtm.htm. Unfortunately, it's split into more than 600 separate downloads. Is there a more practical way of downloading it (less downloads) anywhere?

(I tried the search function before posting, but it gets stuck with a "waiting for remote server" message.)

Do you really want the mesh for the whole world? :o

I fly FSE (FSEconomy), so I usually hop around globally. Initially, I was planning on starting with one region and combining it with TileProxy, to see whether it's my cup of tea. But even my starting point, Europe, is a lot of different files, thus my quest for a less manual download procedure.

My suggestion: get DAP. With it you can download all files without having to select them one by one. Just let DAP select them all and download them all. I did it this way. Took a day to download all though......

Does DAP work with pages that don't have the download link directly on them, but where the links execute a CGI script that pop up a second window with an FTP address?

Not only that, isn't the free access download limit capped to two files at a time?

I just re-installed DAP myself and tried to download the complete mesh at once. Doesn't seem to work anymore like that. Probably because of the page opening before you download. It used to work though.

Sorry for giving any false hopes.

Someone at FSE mailed the author, and he's positive to the idea of making his mesh available for download in bigger chunks, so in a few weeks the problem might be solved!   [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

I too decided that payware was the way to go for the whole world.... and payware typically also has better data and finer resoplution in some areas.  I use FSGeneis for the whole world, including the buffer mesh.

best,

To download all is little less than 8 GIGAbyte. Unzipped? You don't want to know.....

FSGlobal looks pretty nice. How big a hit did your computer's performance take with it?

It doesn't appear to affect it at all. It just replaces/modifies/improves the existing Default Mesh...;)...!

That's good to hear. I've been attempting to "tweak" FSX so it will perform better on my system, but I'm still having more frame rate issues then I'm happy with. I've started flying in FS9 again, and I've been looking for quality to add-ons to help improve FS9 some. I'll definitely look into FS Global alittle more.
