Long boot times

Postby jack_ryan » Wed Jan 11, 2012 4:22 pm

Hi All,

How long does it take for your FS9 install to get to the main selection screen?  I realize I have 360+ entries in my scenery.cfg and have probably 150 aircraft (most are AI), but should it take 3-5 minutes for to boot?  Im running Win 7 Extreme edition and I have a sata 6 drive running the whole thing, so is that too long to wait?

Thanks,
Sean

On my win7 premiumn install, i have 38 scenery entries and 48 aircraft, it takes roughly 25 sec to load so i'd guess yours is due to the amount of files that are being checked.

Not sure about my xp install which i know has more but it's also a slower system

May the Mynd be with you.
So far my number of landings either passenger or pilot equal my number of takeoffs.

I wonder if moving to an SSD would help?

Do you really need 150+ aircraft on your Hangar?.... :o...!

I mostly use around 1/2 doz or-so aircraft regularly, the rest are tucked away in a separate folder, as and when required.
Makes my preferred craft quicker to load, and quicker to find!

Most people think that flying a plane is dangerous, except pilots because they know how easy it is.
Arguing with a pilot is like wrestling with a pig in the mud, after a while you begin to think the pig likes it.

I've never had boot times for FS9 or FSX below two minutes, even with fresh installs, and that's on a system that was absolute top of the commercially available line three or four years ago and is now somewheres about mid range for performance computers. Since I've switched to Windows 7, it's load times have gone down considerably, so, apparently more RAM per program helps, but its still around three minutes for a hundred or so aircraft.

I'd recommend moving planes that you don't fly much, or even all the planes you don't plan to fly in a game session to a separate folder, since they seem to be the primary culprits for load time.

OK, so I need to cull the litter so to speak.  How do I decide? I mean I understand the 15 or so airplanes I fly all the time, but what about the AI stuff?  Also does it help to remove variants within aircraft or they all seen as one aircraft to the system?

Thanks,
Sean

Sean
I have 234 AC files (including 39 AI's). I'm running XP Pro SP3 & my load time is 60 secs. However, I only have 6 extra files in my addon scenery file. We've had this discussion here before. I tried to find the last time we did, I think it was with Fozzer.  I keep all my Add On scenery in a separate folder I call FS9 scenery. When loading scenery in FS it automatically selects Addon Scenery file. At that point you backup & select your scenery folder & add from there. This way you are not loading your 360 scenery files at boot up & FS accesses  then only when they are needed. This method also keeps memory usage down which enhances your FS performance.  ;)
