Make sure you have dialled in the correct ILS frequency for the airfield you are aiming for, and not a local VOR, etc, and make sure you are aiming for the correct end of the runway when you press the "APR" button!
(avoid using Back-course "REV" during the approach, it will lead you astray!).
Dialling, and listening to "ATIS" before reaching the Airfield, will inform you of the details necessary for landing; weather conditions, correct runway heading, etc....
..and make sure you are at the correct height to pick up the glide-path signal....2,000 feet or less....

P.S. Are you fully conversant with Radio Navigation, using the Default Cessna 172 Trainer with its Bendix-King Radio Stack?
