Editing Aircraft.CFG problems

:-/ Hi All.

My problem that I present before you may be complicated to some, and at the same time very easy to others.

I was attempting to edit my Aircraft.cfg the other day, and after I had made my changes and had tried to save, i had recieved an error messagee saying "make sure path and file name are correct", and then I clicked "OK", it took me to that specific aircrafts folder, and giving me an option on what to save it as, with "aircraft.cfg" already in the text box", and after saving it, it took me back to the first error message, and back and fourth, and back, and fourth.

One key thing to remember is my OS is windows vista, and I know Vista and FS9 aren't the best of mates  :P

Anybody have any ideas?

Two possible reasons I can think of.

1. The file is Read-only. Right-click on the file & select Properties. Change the Attributes if necessary.

2. Vista treats files in the Program Files directory as System files. Try moving the file you wish to edit to a different location like the Desktop. After editing it & saving changes paste it back.

Please take back-up copies all files you intend editing.

....no idea what you have actually done but  if it's a default a/c you could get a new cfg or even the whole aircraft from the #1 disc: If a third party plane again get a new cfg from the download or reinstall the complete plane.........commoner

I don't think the original file is the problem. He's trying to edit it.

I think you are right about the attributes thing... Whilst these aircraft.cfg files are not normally Read Only, they might be using Vista..if that is so then the error message is exactly what you would get if trying to edit it.

As I siad earlier, there are two possibilities I can think of.

Apart from what I've read on this forum I have no knowledge of Vista. As I understand it this is a common problem when trying to edit MSFS files in the default location. Vista treats them as System files & will not allow you to save changes. I suspect this is the most likely cause of Jersey Flyer's problem. It can be overcome by moving the file to a different location before attempting to edit it.

It could of course be Read-only. I wonder how many people know that burning files to a CD to back them up converts the attributes to Read-only. You can avoid this by zipping them up first.

NOTE: TURNING OFF UAC DOESN'T MEAN YOU CAN STOP RUNNING PROGRAMS AS ADMIN. Make sure to run all programs as admin whether UAC is on or off or whether you are the admin or not.

Indeed. File/Save As. I hadn't thought of that. I've just tried it on a Read-only file & it should work for that too. Just make sure the saved file is named Aircraft.cfg.
