FS9 starts in SAFE MODE

Postby FridayChild » Tue Jun 24, 2008 9:02 am

You know the Windows XP Start Menu, with the list of the most recently used programs. That's how I noticed that my FS9 lately is starting in safe mode, which means it uses software rendering rather than hardware rendering. The icon in the recent apps menu is called "Safe Mode" instead of "Flight Simulator 2004", and the command line has the "-SWREND" switch. I don't know why this is happening, because I launch FS9 using the usual shortcut which hasn't the -SWREND switch.
I think this started happening since I created a custom profile for FS2004 in nHancer.
Can you help me?

Basically the last time you exited FS9 you were in windowed mode hence it now starts in windowed mode.
While flying and pressing Alt Enter now does nothing and you remain in widowed mode, thus you have to bring down the Alt Menu, select View and click on Full Screen.

I don't think that will fix it. Safe Mode is not the same as Windowed mode.

...a start up in "Safe Mode" generally means you have seriously cocked-up something, or other...

...very similar to the "Blue Screen of Death"...when it has all gone pear-shaped in the Windows Department...... :o...!

..Been there, wept, gone into DOS to fix it... :)...!

No Paul. This is FS2004 Safe Mode. Nothing to do with Windows. ---> http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;894733#XSLTH3133121121120121120120

Safe Mode in FS2004 just means that the rendering will be done in software (=slow and limited in capabilities) instead of relying on the video card hardware. Safe Mode is activated by the -swrend command line switch. I think FS2004 is trying to load in normal mode, is failing and is falling back to safe mode, all by itself, and maybe this is related to the fact that nHancer loads a custom profile when fs9.exe is launched. Professional help needed here ;D
