Second Install

Hi,

maybe this will sound dumb but can i install FS9 twice in my PC in a different folder ?

I inserted the first disc and it showed : Run, Uninstall and Register options but no Install

Any help appreciated

The first installation would have already generated a Folder, and inserted the FS9 details into the main Registry...

I doubt if it would accept two identical sets of information into the same Registry...!

Confusion will abound... ...!

A duplicate install was a common way to fix problems with earlier versions of FS. It should work with FS9 but I haven't tried it. Simply rename the FS9 root directory folder with any other name - for example "Flight Simulator 9 orig". This will hide it from the setup program. Then insert the CD & install in the usual way. Not sure if both installations would work afterwards as FS9.cfg is in a separate directory.

PS. At one time I had 2 installs of FS98, 3 of CFS1, 4 of CFS2 & 2 of FS2002 all running happily alongside each other on the same PC.

BY no means am I a professional but I am pretty certain that all you need to do is to rename the fs9.exe file and then you should be able to install it again in another folder. The only thing you have to be carefull of is the short cuts for both copies so you know which short cut goes to which copy. 8-)

That is correct....just rename the fs9.exe. I also created custom icons for each version
so my shortcuts are easy to ID as to which version is involved.

I have four installs of FS9 on my system. The original fs9.exe, fs9_clean.exe,
fs9_USA.exe and fs9_Europe.exe.

My original install got so bloated with addons that I decided to create a "clean" install
for testing. Then I decided to cretae installs for the two areas I fly the most with
plane sets and AI tailored to those areas. Each install is on a different partition
and/or harddrive.

Taking it a step further, I created  common Addon Scenery, Scenery and fsfsconv folders
on yet another partition. All four installs share those common folders and have their own
scenery.cfg files, etc.

As to the registry entry, I seldom worry about it as I always install addons to a TEMP
directory and then move the files to whichever version(s) I want them in.
There is at least one little utility that will allow you to modify the registry entry for FS9
at will should you find it necessary.

The registry entrys are just for the uninstall feature and some addons. Copies can
just be deleted like any other file. You can also have several exe's of different names
in the same install, as for diffetent joysticks. There may be some way to change it,
but all copies seem to have the same default flight and share saved flights.

By having different names for the EXE file you will automatically have seperate CFG files
for each EXE, so settings such as axis assignments, etc should be independant.
