Unless the airports you usually use are little landing strips, you should be able to tell the simualtor to place your plane on a parking or a gate.

Don't tell me that (for example) if you start a flight in KJFK, FS9 doesn't allow you to start you flight in a gate. It would be strange alright. ???

While in the select go to airport menu after you enter the code for the air port if you look down you will see a window that reads active runway by clicking on that window and scrolling down you should be able to see the other starting positions for that airport. Some of the small strips will only have active runway as a option as there are no other starting positions for that airport.
If you so desire you can use AFCAD to add parking spots to any airport in FS.
If you still have problems send me a private message and I will be glad to help you out. 8)
