Heat Haze

Postby Tweek » Wed Sep 21, 2005 11:31 am

I recently downloaded the 3rd version of Martyn Becker's Engine Exhaust System, with smoke/heat haze/APU effects, and I didn't really see much of a change in the way it looked. I'm pretty sure I got it working because I could see a very slight effect behind my 777. I was wondering whether it is a very hard effect to spot, whether I have installed it wrong and it is only showing slightly, or whether the effect can be cranked up so that it can actually be seen without looking for it!

Tweek,
There's no real difference in the way it looks in the latest version; it was more to do with additional features, and tidying it up a little. It's supposed to be a fairly subtle effect, as real modern jets don't put out smoke as such. So it's a balance between not making it too smoky (i.e. visible), and not making it visible enough.

Tweek,

It is supposed to be subtle... look at a real plane.

Subtle often is the key to realism.... if something stands out too much it doesn't slide into the place that the real thing occupies in your consciousness.

The best effects for realism are actually subtle if the rela thing is subtle.

best,

Exactly...  I'm not usually one for a lot of smoke, but I do like these effects in their subtle-ness.

Well, as you can see from these two pictures, the heat completely distorts the background (or the aircraft in the Tornado's case :P)

It would be good to get something like this, along with the few realistic smoke effects out there. Maybe the texture files can be edited?

Oh, and speaking of subtlety in terms of smoke, I guess you have to take into consideration what aircraft you are flying. I would hardly call this subtle: :)
