Sudden blackouts in FS9

Postby Lysander77 » Wed Sep 14, 2005 7:48 pm

Two different actions cause the FS9 program to blackout suddenly and close the program.
Action one: using Alt+F, then going to Map, then using the cursor to drag the aircraft across the map to a new location for more than a certain minimum distance.
Action two: set the flight destination for a flight of an hour or more and leave the aircraft flying unattended.  At some point, usually within half-an-hour or so, FS9 blacks out and closes the program.
Is there a known cause (and remedy) for such problems?
                 Many thanks for any clues,

is this problem occuring with a default aircraft or a download? do you have any third party addons for fs installed that are running when you perform these actions?

Many thanks for your prompt and courteous responses. Yes, the version of FS9 is indeed 9.1. And addons? Yes, indeed. More addons than basic program, to wit: Visual Flight's scenery of the British Isles (4 volumes), France VFR's Brittany Islands, Paris Environs, etc., etc.; Abacus Pub's EZ-GPS and European Enhanced Terrain, an Icarus Gold aircraft, and British Airports (2 volumes)  from Just Flight.
What's puzzling is why the blackouts come when everything is running smoothely and well.  With the map, the blackout happens only if the distance the aircraft is "dragged" exceeds a substantial limit (perhaps 100 miles).  The other blackout happens when the program has been running perfectly well for half-an-hour or longer, undisturbed (perhaps there's a turn-off trigger if no commands are issued after a certain period of time?).
Thanks again for responding.

I have found when this happens to me it is because I have something downloaded and installed in the scenery that is corrupt. When the sim has to render the area you are in the corrupt file(s) closes the sim. Try flying a different aircraft in some different area of the world than you normally fly that isnt close to anything you have installed for scenery. If it doesnt happen again in a different area, something isnt installed correctly or it is corrupt in some way

Search this forum for 'crash to desktop' and 'fs9.cfg' over the past 60 days. Lots of good reads here at SimV :-) Good Luck.

Many thanks.  That's a good idea. Especially as the blackout seems to take place as the plane is traveling between England and France, where to different types of addon scenery are coming together (Visual Flight's England and France VFR's Normandy).
I'll follow your suggestion and see how it works.
Thanks again for your interest and effort.

:)

Thanks to all. Yes, reinstalling the scenery for France seems to have cured the difficulty.  There was a warning, in the FS9 update recently, that after updating some addons might not work correctly. The warning was correct.
Thanks again for taking time to address a problem that was particulary annoying.
