Holding Pattern and ILS Approach Practice

Postby nema_flyboy » Thu Aug 11, 2005 11:20 am

HI All,

Firstly, i'll just clear up that this isn't my first visit to the boards, however i've since deleted my previous email address and forgotten my last username used here, but feel free to welcome me as a newbie if you please.

ok, so my question......and this has probably been asked a gazillion-trillion times before, and for asking it again i apologize, but i've searched and searched and cant see anything vaguely looking to be what im after.

Basically, i want to practice holding patterns and ILS approaches without having to take off first and then circle in the pattern until ushered in by ATC.

Is there anyway, short of starting a flight and lining up the a/c with the ILS/Holding pattern, of doing this.

If its of any use i'm running FS9.1 with Traffic2004.

Links, guides, step-by-step tutorials etc will be very much welcomed.

My thanks for any help in advance.

Hiya

When you're flying at the alt/hdg etc that you want just save the flight, give it a name and tick the 'make default flight' box.

Then whenever you start, you'll be dropped right back there.

BTW there's a small bug in FS9, you may have to select the flight first time round and tick the 'make default flight' box again but after that it''ll remember.

Good flying

When I'm practicing my approaches I take off, come around, and then save the game so you can always pick up at that time.

You can also play with your altitude and stuff in the map screen.

hi, you can also use slew mode to line yourself up.  Simply press Y on the keyboard, and use the controls to line your self up.

It only takes a few secs to set up, but you do need to get used to the controls, look at the assignments.

Its great....

Good luck

Now who would want to cheat like that? ::) Takes all the fun out...

I just finished my first ILS Approach today in a 737! It's a lot easier to do. Glad I finally figured it out ;D

i know what ur sayin.... but flyboy said he wanted to use it to practise, and was sick of keep having to do a flight.....

loading a saved flight would give you the same effect.... after all you cant just switch an aircraft on, mid air can you???

I do know where your comin from though cause you could use it, if you lined up your aircraft incorrectly and would touch down on the grass.... that would be cheatin!!!

neways either way would work just as effectively :)

I have found the 737 to be one of the easiest jets to fly and land, no doubt why they are so popular with simmers.

Thanks all, just what i was looking for.....

finally decided to slew to about FL075 and out with about 10nm to fly to the inner marker, set flaps 10deg and gear down. paused and saved the flight, so now its all ready to go when i need to practice!!

FWIW, im flying the excellent MelJet 777-200 in UA's new Livery.... find it here (WARNING : off-site link): MelJet 777-200 UA new Livery and its panel here : 777-200 Panel, incl. GPS and TCAS

thank you all so much...now only one question bugs me:
if it was this easy, why didn't i figure it out before?!?  nevermind, i'll go sit in my corner now :(
