The most common reason for a plane not showing up is that the correct folder is simply inside another folder and the player didn't notice. I'm certain that everyone here has made this simple mistake from time to time. I know I have.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Also, check to be sure you did not install it to the FS9 Directory (or some other folder) instead of the aircraft folder, where it should be.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Make sure the folder you are installing has the following:
Model folder.
contains a .mdl file and a Model.cfg file
Texture folder
contains various .bmp files
Sound folder
contains various .wav files (not always) and a Sound.cfg file (always)
Panel folder.
contains various .bmp files (not always) and a panel.cfg file (always)
.air file
aircraft.cfg file.
These are the minumum items that must be in the folder for the plane for it to work. If any of these are missing, the plane will not work.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Open up the Aircraft.cfg file with notepad and look for the following:
This is an example, yours may be different...
ui_manufacturer=ALPHA
ui_type=F-80 Shooting Star
ui_variation=1. F-80C-10-LO
The reason I use this example is this: Everyone knows the F-80 was manufactured by Lockheed, but this is the Alphasim F-80, and instead of using a proper name in the FS9 aircraft menu, they have chosen to use their own. Ui_manufacturer is the first name you will look for in the aircraft menu, but not everyone does it right. BTW, here is your opportunity to change it if they did screw it up.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
If anyone else can think of any silly reasons why this may not work, please post them. If it is one of these, don't be embarrased, because it has happened to us all... ;)
