Tips for setting nav aids

Postby town » Fri May 27, 2005 6:34 am

I know I am very stupid when it comes to instrument navigation and landing, but is there any quick way of setting the frequencies for airport ILS systems... and how do you know you are on the glidescope? do you get a constant tone or something like that?

Hi!
Here is a most excellent tutorial by Nav.

See if that helps you. I think all your answers are there.
You know if you are on the glidescope (providing you flick the NAV1 switch  to ON on the radio and have the GPS/Nav switch set to NAV) because the needle on the ILS indicator will be sensitive.
You know if you have signal because the morse code will sound.

There is an excellant gauge that I use and have placed it on my default mini panel (which I am thinking of uploading here).

The gauge is calle "RWY INFO" gauge. Click on this gauge, type in the Airfield ID and it brings up a list of of the frequencies for everything. Since I like doing ILS approaches, I double click on the RW I want to use that has ILS and it automatically enters the frequency, course heading etc. Very simple and much much easier than setting the course and frequencies manually.

Can't remember where I got the gauge, have had it forever. Maybe a Google search will bring it up.
