Framerates again

I know, this is a topic without an end, but:

when I restart my computer before flying I have much better framerates.
When the computer is used all day (3 kids !) and I start flying I have framerates between 10 and 20. When I first restart my computer I have framerates up to 40, sometimes more.

Does someone have an explanation (maybe a cure?) for this?

I run Win '98, and that suffers from a gradual decrease in memory over a period of time, it does not arrange it's memory very efficiently, (a common fault with Win '98...).

Over the course of a day my memory can decrease from 768 MB to nearly zero. This slows everything down...and in the end I get the message...."not enough memory to run the application".
This requires a re-boot to restore the memory back to normal.

Note: small children equipped with glasses of Coka Cola dripping over the computer and keyboard can also affect it's efficiency... ...!

yeah its probably your RAM getting used up.
get a program called memturbo http://www.memturbo.com/ ,
it frees up RAM and maks your computer run faster. I use it,
but in a magazine(i forget wich one) it said MemTurbo
slowly damages your computer like smoking.
I had 250meg of free RAM , then when I used MemTurbo
it went up to 425meg of free RAM.

RAM is your computer's short term memory.  Shutting it down before you fly clears out the used RAM, and thus, speeds you up when you start the sim.

There are all kinds of tricks to freeing up RAM (which gives you better framerates, esp. if the sim can cache things there temporarily instead of on the HD)... rather than install tweaking apps that change stuff without my input, I've hunted around for tips on manually changing some settings. First thing is to check to see how many programs you have running automatically; many of them aren't usually needed. You should consider even disabling some of them altogether, but setting them to "manual" helps. It's only a little per program, but they can add up.
 That's just one aspect of it- there's a whole lot more you can try. I haven't seen mind-blowing increases in average framerates, but I will say the rates are consistent (although my system doesn't see half the activity yours does).
I'll see if I can find links to some of the tutorials I've followed- but if you mess with this stuff, take their advice (and mine) and be sure to backup, set restore points, etc. before you dive in.

Aaaah ... kids and computers, don't mention it. Cola, chips, fingernails, things from their nose, glue. I only mention the things that don't make you sick, otherwise I get banned.

And they are surfing on the internet, so virusus, spyware, adware, strange sounds, curieus programs, changed settings ...

Another way to get your frame-rates back up again is to pull out a set of FS2002 cd's... :-)

I can consistently get over 90+ FPS in there! :-)

98 is past 100FPS! :-)

90 fps ?  You're kidding ! Or it must be without clouds, scenery, ATC, planes (Windows, dos,)

Yep, you read it correctly! :-)

That is stock scenery, aircraft etc, all sliders maxed out :-)

Hoping to get a raid setup going here in a few days and see if that will help performance in 2004.. :-)
