Do you have cfgEdit?

Now that you know I'm not a complete idiot - lets address your VC.

I don't have this panel and I just reformatted my HD and I haven't installed FS04 on it yet, so I'm still a little in the dark.

Some FS04 gauges use a slightly different syntax than FS02 gauges.  If the panel is designed for FS02 but you're using it in FS04 you won't see the gauges because of the syntax.

Open your panel.cfg in cfgEdit.  Go to the VC panel.  Click on "Add Gauge".  When the menu pops up go to Spitfire_mk.gau.  Add a gauge - it doesn't matter which one or where you add it but put it in a visible portion of the panel, we just want to test the syntax.  Make sure the "save old panel.cfg" option is on so you don't lose the existing panel.

You should now see your new gauge.  Save and exit.

Go back to panel.cfg and look at the syntax of your new gauge - it should be the last one you added.  You should see something like (I'm copying this from your file):

[Vcockpit01]
Background_color=0,0,0
size_mm=256,256
position=7
visible=0
ident=
pixel_size=512,512
texture=$SPIT-LU

gauge12=Spitfire_MKI!Fuel_Warning, 160, 79,26
gauge13=Spitfire_MK1!Fuel_warning, xx,xx,xx,xx

How does gauge13 differ from gauge12?  That's your syntax problem.

These planes were designed for CFS 2 and were converted for use in FS9.

I don't know if I had what was to be expected due to the differences between the two.  As far as flightsimmimg goes, I am young as most simmers reckon things.  I'm only just figuring out how to hack panels.  And Webb, the last thing I would call you (or anybody else from whom I ask help) is "a complete idiot".

Thanks for all your input and responses...I may give that a try.  I'll be doing a machine upgrade soon so I'll probably wait until afterwards to do so.

Just poking fun at myself, really.  My first suggestion must have seemed way off the wall but when it worked it didn't seem so ridiculous.  So maybe my second suggestion will work, if you can understand it - it gets a little obtuse.

When I did the W98/XP upgrade I didn't do the wimpy one.  Reformatted the HD in NTFS and started from scratch - that's the only way to avoid future problems.  Saving FS02 was a major priority.  I ended up with 2 CDs full of data.  And when you back up, back up everything!

I know what you mean about backing up...

I plan to just do it to an external drive (I have two HDDs of data to back up as I have two separate installations of XP on removable HDD...I did it that way to keep my gaming and office software seperate).

If I knew which mark of Spitfire this is I would willingly download it & the panel to check it out. Now I come to look at it with fresh eyes there's something strange about those DVC entries. This could be sorted out by manually editing Panel.cfg. I think we're in danger of getting too technical here.

This is the entry I mean. Note that the gauge numbers run out of sequence.
