Is there any way to see what the winds are at different altitudes? For example, I took the new Commander 690B from Sri Lanka over toward Indonesia, making about 240 knots groundspeed. Then as I was decending into my destination, I passed through about 8000 feet and -shazaaaym- groudspeed jumped to 300+. So I'm flying the pattern at 300 knots groundspeed, thinking 'man I wish I coulda rode this wind from Sri Lanka'.

I looked in the Weather panel for a bit to see if there was anything there, but nope. BTW I was using updated real weather.

There is a nice little gauge that I have put on most of my panels and minipanel. It is a nice looking wind direction and speed gauge. It always displays the direction and speed of the winds. Great visual info at a glance from a nice looking gauge. I am at work, otherwise I would post a small pic. of the gauge to see if it is something you would like.

You can email me and I will send you a pic. or let me know here if this might be what you are looking for. If you think it is, state so here and when I get home tom. I will post a small pic. for you.

If you decide you like it, then we can add it to any panel you have very easily.

If using realworld weather in FS9 realworld weather data can be had from the National Weather Service Put the URL in your FS9 kneeboard and all relevant data can be used in the FS9 cockpit.

Yeah I've got that one on quite a few of my panels, but it only tells current info...I'm looking for something like I get out of DUATS, or better yet a profile like you see when you create your own weather.

Two ways here-

in flight: hit shift+z, that'll give you the winds.

pre-flight: hit "real world weather", and then ok.  After that, go back into the weather screen, hit "user defined weather", "customize weather" and now you can check the winds of all the individual weather stations along your route.  make sure to hit "cancel, cancel" on your way out!

Best reason we know of is the Jet Streams. I jumpseated on an MD-80 flight with AA to Bermuda and back from Atlanta I believe it was, we were doin' well over 530 knots all the way out there, only toppin' about 350 on the way back. Majority of the way the wind indicator was maxed at 99. No clue what it actually was, but either way, wow.

That sounds like it'll work. Wonder why I didn't think of that.....

Today I flew a little farther into Indonesia on my way to PNG, and I was getting 300 knots groundspeed at FL200, a 35 knot jump from what the winds at 150 were.

I'll try that idea next time I load up FS.

 I use an application add-on to the kneeboard called
vpn1.4 that lets me "surf" to the net for various pieces
of flight related info.

One of the links I added was for "winds aloft" data.

I might be missing the point here, but is itnot possible that the weather updated with a new wind speed just as you were passing through FL80? Aaaaaannd you'll have the FAA on your tailplane if you were doing 300knots below FL100 limit is 240knots unless Im mistaken

Actually it's 250kts, not that is that big of a deal  :)
