I did manage to get into the cfg for Aircraft F4B-4 and it listed it as. FS9\Aircraft\Beech_Baron_58\F4B-4

Give me some more informaiton on this because this definately shouldn't be. The path to an add-on F4 .cfg file should be something like: "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator 9\Aircraft\F4 Phantom

Or similar to this.

Also with Windows XP all you need to do to open an aricraft's .cfg is to double click on the file. Windows will open a dialog box giving you the options: "Use web service to find the appropriate program" and "Select the program from a list". Select the second "Select from a list" option then click "OK". Windows will give you an "Open With" box. Just scroll down that until you find Notepad and select that and click "OK" again and the .cfg will be opened in Notepad. From then on all you have to do is double click on the .cfg file and it will open in Notepad automatically.

Thanks guys ....I told you I only had two brain cell's ;)

I will print off the latest replies and absorb before coming back again .....should keep me busy for a while!
Incidently the short cut I refered  to was the 'fs download'(temp'file') that my son put on the desktop to save me going through Program files, microsoft Games etc. Catch you later!

Hi Guy's.....I'm back! After many hours reading and re-reading the excellent toot's that were recommended and applying them .I think I have finally solved it!!
I will try to keep it as short as possible......First off I checked all the aircraft folders in FS9.....guess what?...I found three aircraft neatly tucked up in the Beech Baron folded.....I checked the BB cfg folder and it only showed the information for Beech Baron so that meant that I could get rid of the offending aircraft....in doing so I lost the BB >:(.....No problem.... uninstalled the Sim and reloaded it....Problem solved!
Next thing to do was to apply the advice that you guy's gave me(I have learnt quite a lot of basic computor'skills' in doing it.....Manuals always seem to assume that everyone who buys a computor knows how they work ???)
I tried the cut and paste but found that it only put the aircraft in the FS9 Aircraft folder,it didn't show up in the Sim,Soooo! I tried the 'lift an drop' method'(HOW to's Aircraft Installation.....same aircraft as previous attempt) That worked fine .... the aircraft appeared in the FS9/aircraft folder and in the Sim.Having solved the problem of getting a successful download I then applied that to other downloads......The success rate is about 50%(See SIBBRITT's comments in his post on Feb 20) so I am not too bothered about that ,at least if the download is compatable then it will show up!
Thanks to HAGAR,FRANK_CARBON,MattNW and the other's that I haven't mentioned.
In future I will have try to remember the principles that I applied when I worked for a living :) (Development Engineer in R&D in the Aircraft and Medical industry) ....only try ONE thing at a time ,....if that dosen't work put it back to square one and try something else!!!......... the two 'brain cells' are what I have got left now!! ;) ;)....I devide my time now between Computors and 'HAM Radio' ....Hence the G7

Thanks Guy's

Glad we could help. With a little more practice you should be getting 100%. In fact, if you're understanding the hows and whys you'll be able to troubleshoot more effectively. For example, "how come my GeeWhiz 400 has no sound? Let's see, hey, there's no sound.cfg file in the the sound folder". Right? While deleting and reinstalling FS9 can solve many anomalies, as you get more add-on aircraft, textures, scenery, etc., and I know you will, the whole delete and reinstall FS9 along with all the add-ons becomes rather time consuming and often times unnecessary. Especially when the dilemma can be solved with a few quick clicks. Deleting and reinstalling FS9 because the latest "Gmax FS 2004 Egg Beater SST" gauges didn't show up when you tried to fly the machine is akin to burning down your house and building a new one because the light in the refigerator didn't go on when you opened the door :-). Anyhow, have fun.
