fs9 in a diferent partittion

Hi all, due to some prblms I'll have to do a total format of my HD so, having to spend all this time I thought of maybe doing a separate partition for FS9... but I'd like to know if you think this is worth the double instalation of win xp...

I had to partition mine with a 250 Gig HD, I have everything on drive C:, and use the partition side to keep a backup of FS and other things, works out really nice that way so if I need to reformat the C drive I can without doing anything with the D drive  ;D

Also I have copies of a lot of my aircraft on CD, especially my payware, just in case the whole thing would crash.....

You do NOT need to install XP on both partitions. Now, I have yet to attempt installing FS on the non-os partition, so I donlt know if you will get any performance gains/losses. But I would think a seperate hard drive for FS would be good......

I think I have a couple Western Digital 40GB 7200 RPM drives, and a couple open IDE spots.... Maybe stripe the drives for the FS installation? Could be worth looking into.

I was thinking the same but kept quiet as I have no knowledge of XP. If you DID need to install it on both partitions I don't see the benefit.

On my previous machine I had a separate small drive for CFS1 & CFS2. This was easy to maintain as it didn't get clogged up with all the rubbish after going online for a short period & all the other temp files. When I did need to defrag the drive it only took a few minutes instead of hours. Both sims ran beautifully. I haven't tried this with FS9. Not sure how it would work out as some default files, like fs9.cfg, are installed to the same drive as the OS.

A possible alternative to dual boot to run a minimum system for FS9 would be to create a new user account with only minimal services to run FS9 in. (Not my idea, saw it here in the COF forum a few weeks ago)

There is also FSAutoStart to close down unnecessary programs and services.

My two sense worth says don't bother partitioning large HDs. I partitioned all my drives from '87 thru '97 until coming to the conclusion it's nothing but a pain.

I could never remember which data was on which drive and many programs (even MS Word) won't run across drives.

p.s. my current drive (although all the other (4) machines are still operational) has a 120GB single C:/ drive -- :-)
