Question about "locked" framerates?

Postby JBaymore » Mon Oct 25, 2004 11:44 am

I forget where I read this...... but I remember it being from what I thought was a very reliable sourdce...... someone in the software or hardware design end of things for FS addons.......

But he said that contrary to what was true for fs2002...... the fs2004 program actually did not perform better with the frameraetes locked.  In fact he said that iot performed better UNLOCKED.

Can't say if that is true or not.... just passing on some "heresay" that I can't tremember the source for.

I have tried running unlocked now for a while..... and it MAY have made an improvement in smoothness .....but if so,...... it was not dramatic.  And I can't see any visual difference ion the graphics with it unlocked.

Interested in hearing other's opinions.

best,

...............john

i lock mine on 100, not meaning you will have a consistant 100fps, but close enough,  i find the difference between 20 and 50fps is huge, much smoother

I have not noticed a difference at 20 than at 50, but will experiment when I get home tonight and set it to unlimited and fly around various areas from over water, to over bushlands, to busy cities

I put a thread in about this a couple of months ago .... I read it in  PC Pilot  and I now run FS9 with no limits on frame rates . There is no disernable drop off in performance, it runs nice and smoothly and the FPS varies as you would expect dependant on weather and terrain.

Give it a go

cheers

I am on the fence about this one.  Sometimes I will run with no limitations to frame rates, then others I will lock them at 25.  It seems at times, depending on what aircraft I am flying, the terrain around me, the weather, and which FS god is smiling down on me, the performance differs depending on locked or not....  I am going to say that it is all up the system you are running, and the set up you have in FS that decides what kind of performance you get and frame rates. ;D

In my opinion for what it is worth, having frame rates unlocked forces your computer to continue to try to hit the highest frame rate possible, common sense will tell you that it is using more resources than necessary to do this, and in using more resources will take away from other aspects of the sim in one way or another.
Whereas having the framerates locked the computer will work only as hard as it needs to hit that rate, thus freeing resources for the sims other needs.
We all agree that FS9 is a resource hog, so why make the sim itself use any more than needed?
And then there is the arguement about what the eye can notice anyway ;)

Well, hop in an extra 300 and do some snap rolls, you'll notice a difference between 20 and 50. TV is at 30FPS, and occasionally I can see it, if the lighting is correct, and my mind is focused.

I have been thinking about this and used to think limiting could help but then I thought this.

The computer doesn't try to get better once it say hits 50fps, it just hits it and cant do any more.  I'm sure it wont waste resources in the aim of trying to get a further 20fps or somthin.  I think that now it is a LIMIT not a TARGET fps.  This is why your FPS go up and down when it needs resources for other things your FPS drop a bit simple.

I think everyone will have there own opinion on this subject but as long as our games are all playing smoothly who cares  ;D

And if your game isn't running smoothly then go see Michael at FS-GS  ;D http://www.FS-GS.com   ;D

Hi
Ok my 2 cents worth
Im on a slow system and always tweaking anything to get a few extra fps
What I have noticed is if you lock you FPS the sim sets the

There is an actual REAL theory behind frame rates. Not plugging Ramsa again, but if you use his services, you will see. There is actually a mathematical theory to figuring out what your "target" frame rates are! This is all part of his "System Unification"!

John, with all the components you have running in your sim pit, you really should check into Micheal's services. Believe me, you will not be disappointed and you will learn the entire theory of how your sim interacts with your PC. Once again, not just sliding everything to its Max, there is a few hours of work "behind the scenes" of your PC set up before you ever even turn on your sim!

The real time on making the adjustments are made outside of the sim, the internal "slider adjustments" take five minutes!

Fly2e is correct, I just couldn't work out how to word it lol.  With the FS-GS service it is all explained etc on how to properly set it up  ;D

Was reading the recent PC pilot and came across a good article about flying. Although TV's run at 25-30 fps (or thereabouts), you have to remember that TV's have a blur in the pictures which adds greatly to the smooth sense of motion. On flight simulator, you're looking at static frames of an aircraft moving which is why it appears more jumpy.
