Woodie, you say the Comet was a failure, and commercially it was, but it lead to the Nimrod, which is still in service in the RAF in a number of guises!

Has anyone else tried the 'Historical Flight' scenario - the London-Melbourne Race?

And going back to the beginning - don't forget the US and Imperial gallons are not the same - in case anyone is still worried about MPG.

Anyway we are enlightened and use litres per kilometre...much cheaper that way...?

The Comet's crashed due to metal fatigue from use over a long period of time. They found that there were certain areas (I forget but I think it was on the top of the cabin) where holes would develop in the joins between 2 panels (or it was a hatch, I'm not certain) so they put it in a giant container filled with water, increased the pressure to what it would be like flying at such and such an altutitude and found the problem.

I feel honour-bound to defend the Comet airliner - if only because my uncle helped to build them in Hatfield, I come from Hertfordshire, and I once had the honour of meeting Geoffrey De Havilland.

The Comet was genuinely a decade ahead of its time.
