Autolanding in Fs2004?

Postby ifr_dog » Wed Sep 08, 2004 5:48 pm

I always thought the Boeing 777 and possibly the 747-400 autopilots could intercept the localizer and land the airplanes without any human intervention.

Being the curious type, I tried this with both plans in FS2004 and ended up crashing short of the runway.

Does anyone know which FS2004 planes can autoland?

In reality most commercial aircrafts can autoland (with the exception of some smaller RJ and turboprops)
To do this the aircaft must have a "fail-safe" AP logic, meaning there has to be 2 or more autopilots installed.

What FS default Boeings simulates is somewhat of a "single channel" autoland, meaning the aircraft will nicely follow the glideslope and track the localizer. But it will not actually flare and land it for you. You have to disconnect the AP prior to DA/DH and do that by yourself.

But there are several payware addons that actually simulates multiple AP's

Also remember if two of the three autopilots fail you must do something else...or something like that ::)
