FSS ???

Postby Fox_Molder » Sat Sep 04, 2004 9:28 pm

I see this FSS and a radio frequency at the airport (when you look at the map in the detail of an airport)

what does it meen and what does it stand for.

I am trying to learn all the radio frequency type and there usage.

I am using GPS to navigate but i have the feeling that using radio frequency could be a lot more fun.

FSS = Flight Service Station.  It's probably just a hold over from the real world aviation information that they used to develop their database.  I doubt you'll use it in FS.

Call them if you need gas usually, there are lots of other reasons, I'm not terribly good at explanation so just google it.

Actually, Flight Service Stations are ATC facilities which provide a variety of services, including weather breifings, enroute communications, and VFR search and rescue services. FSSs assist lost aircraft and aircraft in emergency situations, relay ATC clearances, original NOTAMS, broadcast aviation weather

My real world field no tower but a fully functioning FBO with FSS services.  I use them all the time, and yes, they are contacted on .8.
