Too many paintjobs ?

Postby Bazza » Sun Aug 01, 2004 5:53 pm

There has been a recent trend to supplying new download planes with a multiitude of paintjobs.     I am currently downloading a Chipmunk with 6 (I think.)

How much does this contribute to a megabyte download of 17 MB ?      I know there are many options available to speed up downloading but unfortunately, not for me.

Why not supply the plane and post optional downloads later so those who want a green one, or an Air Bogota paintjob, can pick them up later if they want.

I recently ended up with a package including a chrome-plated Hercules C130, talk about over the top.     The same thing happened with a Mustang package, I mean do people sit there selecting paintjobs each time they fly, (like getting dressed in the morning) or do they settle for a favourite.     Admittedly it doesn't take much to delete them but I don't want to wait for the downloads in the first place.

I think it varies how much each paintjob adds to the size of the download.  It varies due to the size and detail of the paint.  I like to think that each additional paint file adds about 1 to 2MBs (zipped) to the download, but in many cases that isn't correct.

Paints and sounds take up a lot of space. The new POSKY A340 for example has texture folders sitting at almost 100mb unzipped. I have HDD compression on so they only use 20mb of space. Still a lot though. The mdl file is only 2.5mb.

OK, I've done the download, I was wrong, there's 10 different paintjobs now on my hard-drive.     They are all around about 3.5 MBs each as they sit there.

Now don't get me wrong...........I've had a quick look and they look just great, the designers have done a great job of them, but do I need 10 Chipmunks ?

The space they are taking up isn't a problem for me at all, I've got plenty of room, however I would prefer to try out my new Chipmunk, then select another paint scheme that may suit my tastes, why would I need 10 ?

Bazza there are several different models as well the 10, 22 and 30 in the package. And remember different people want different things. I personally won't fly the bubble canopy Chippie, but our Canadian cousins will... This is probably the best compromise solution, and frankly this model raises design to a whole new level!

I have wondered the same.
I will wait the hour for a download and then see all the repaints pick one I like and discard the rest making a 10+MB file into 3.5MB or less.
I agree with the way most designers do it by making all the repaints a seperate download, but it must take them time to upload each one and it is just easier for them to do everything at once.
So I won't complain much they do it for free and us on dial-up are now the minority or so it seems ;)

If you did fly the canopy bubble model Ozzie, you would find you still have the centre bar right down the middle of your vision.

All points are well made and I agree with most of them.   I still stick to the point that not many simmers will want three versions of the Chippy in 10 paint schemes, especially if they are forced to wait an hour to download it just to discard bits of it.

I am impressed with the work that has been done on it, that wasn't  my point.
