System Hang-ups

Postby rich_lear » Mon Mar 01, 2004 6:42 am

Hi,

I have a problem where after some seemingly random time (never more than 10 mins or so), my system hangs up completely. I have the latest drivers for my video card and the latest directX9. It seems better if I run the app windowed and at 800x600x32

Ricgt now I have the display settings set to very low and it does seem to help

system specs are

dual 700MHz processor
512MB memory
Radeon 9200 128MB video card

any advice would be gratefully accepted!

thanks
rich

It could be a heat related problem or software.  Try re-installing FS9.

Do you get artifacts on the screen?  Do you have hardware temperature monitoring? If yes tell us what the temperatures are.

I am afraid I do not have hardware temp monitoring. I do not think it is temp related as it is only this single application that does this and I run all sorts of stuff on here without any problems.

Each time it hangs I have to to a cold restart and go through the scandisk step.

I forgot to mention I use W98SE as the OS

No screen artefacts.

This is the second re-install

thanks

Rich_Lear,

HI and welcome to SimV.

I'd still be thinking of possible heat issues.  ACOF is a VERY intensive user of both the CPU and the video card processor.  There are not too many programs that run as many calculations per second as this sim.

So what might be fine with multimedia or video editing software or other games might still be pushing the cooling issue.

best,

yeppers, I would look into either adding a fan, or...

remove existing cooling fans from system...

toss system out the window, place on desk one brand new system...replace cooling fan...:-)

Looks to me also a heat issue with the cpu
I had the problem last month and suspected the cpu running hot.
Go into bios and select hardware, there  you might see the temperature of your cpu. Mine was going over 100 celcius and quit.
I went to buy artic silver thermal paste, followed their instructions on the web. I dismantled my huge Zalman
ventilator and discovered it was faulty out of the box. I remounted it according to what seemed obvious and got my system working at a very normal temperature of 39 Celcius. I was lucky.
One clue to this problem would be if you notice that everything starts to slow down. The airplane doesn't even turn anymore, you have no more control, that's your cpu starting to burn.
Good luck

What PSU are you using, is it Generic? What is the rating?  What is your full system set-up (right down to each fan)?

Once again, same problem as him. Cooling in my system is the best you can get by using fans.

If it is not heat it is almost certainly PSU.

Hi all,

thanks for the advice. I am out of the country right now but when I return I will have a look at the hardware and see what can be done.

one more question for you knowledgeable types out there...anysone recommend a good model of a Grob Tutor (Grob 115) for FS2004?

thanks again

A PCI slot fan would help.
