Will downloading and installing better water graphics slow the game down at all?

Like any change you make to the scenery it can effect your frame rates, how much depends upon the system you have. If you hace a Pentium 4 running at 3 GHZ and 1 geg of ram and a 120 gegs of hard drive, you propably wont see any difference. My rule is the lower the system the slower the frame rates.

yes it will especially make a difference if you fly in big cities by the water, thus making the framerate hit much higher no matter what kind of computer you have

If they are straight texture replacements ie same bitmap types and same sizes ie 256x256, 512x512 there will be absolutely no effect on FR at all even though the appearance might be greatly improved.

Like many things to with FS, check the files out before you make the change permanent - and keep backup copies of the old files so you can revert if necessary.

Don't be panicked into thinking that every improvement you make in your sim will hit your FR.

After searching for the best water textures, downloading and trying many and being somewhat disappointed, I gave up. Then one day in the screen shots section a pilot named lemoncat posted a pic. of some flight. What caught my eye, and many others, was the beauty of his water. So some of us asked him about his water textures. He stated that he and his brother, and I forget his name, created those for their use by redoing the original bmps. and the bump map. Several of us convinced lemoncat to package them up.

After much work on his part, checking on the "legal" issues then working up a package to upload, he sent them to several of us to test out. We all agreed that he had to post them. He finally did, and I can honestly say that these, IMHO, are the best and the definitive water textures. There is no additional hit on frame rates as the textures are no bigger than the stock FS9 water textures. The water slider in your game graphics section MUST be set all the way up to get the full beauty, but still look nice set lower.

They are available here at Simviatio in the download section of FS9.

I got all the goodies and all the power I need to run anything thrown at me for the next two months!

Interesting... I downloaded this file and installed. Looks "okay" when the sun is behind me. Looks "great" with the sun in front of me. Looks "terrible" at night.  I get white "reflections" everywhere. Really annoying" Worst part is, I can't go back 'cause I didn't back up my original files. He he! ::)

For everyone still enjoying the delights of FS 2002, (like me), this little add-on program will brighten up your water effects no end... ;D...!

Flight Water Pro.

If I can remember correctly it has a "self-installer" which automatically saves your original textures for you in the form of an "un-installer"... ;)... ;)... ;)...!

Cheers all... ;D...!

Paul....have fun with FS2002...

When the time comes, and may it be many years hence, I'll bet they'll put those CDs in your box with you!

LOL...LOL...LOL...!

Hi Roger...!

By the time they have put all my zillions of Apple 2e/Spectrum 48/Commodore 64/Amstrad 464/Amiga 500/1200/PC/Atari/Megadrive/Amiga32/X-Box, etc, tapes and CD's in my "box" there will be no room left for me... ;D...!
Tee-Hee... 8)...!

Cheers Roger...!

Paul.

P.S I've got FS2004, but I still prefer the scenery textures, (they are brighter), and the add-on "WeatherMaker" program in FS 2002.
FS2002 is the program I use most of the time... ;)...!
