I seem to be getting too high, too low, to fast, to slow
after I try to do the step turn

Remember too look at you VSI. In a turn you want to stay level, so make sure that needle stays level.

I have problems with it too; a major humiliation since I passed the real thing a decade and a half ago. ;)
Some of the checkrides in the game are buggier than a bait store; depending on the game it may not be possible to pass it; as far as I've learned from experimenting and asking here. :)

I dont want to boast, but I passed it with no problems.

I origianlly passed it in fs2000 and thought I might as well try it in FS9.
I had a half-harted attempt and thought I definatley failed, then I heard the "congratulations...."

Im sure I must have just been at the boundarys of acceptance, because she kept telling me to correct speed and angle of turn.

I passed the PPL checkride in FS2000 without any problems, but when It came to the FS2002 checkride, nothing would happen after I completed the flight. This happened a couple times so I figured since I already passed the FS2000 checkride, I was still licensed ;D

Look at the VSI needle at the time of steep turn. It is easy with the help of joystick.
