AM Frequencies as NAVaids

Postby JRoc » Sat May 28, 2005 4:41 am

I had thought about this before, but never really tried and tested it out.

I found a nice database for radio stations, complete with estimated maps of the broadcasting range and transmitter positions (no altitude though :().

Radio-Locator.com

Now, the only real thing to watch for is that the lat and long co-ords are slightly off (sometimes way off) in the FS world, so you'll have to use AFCAD in conjuntion with FS slew mode.

It is basically your standard navaid procedure, except you're using higher frequencies.

Real nice if you're into old-school navigation, or are in a remote area where NDBs are either hard to come by, or just low to mid-high frequencies.

It's a shame you can't set it up so when you tune in to an AM station you could get a webcast of the station (if said station even webcasts), instead of the station identifier code.
