I know that Nick Needham made some awesome touchdown effects and they come for different environments (dirt, water, etc) and sizes small, medium and large aircraft) ... I'm not sure if those are what you're looking for.
Posky has (I think in the 744 V4) a rather nice condensation effect but it could use some tweaking. They also did a nice reverser spray ...
You could also try Dennis Franke's spray effect. I tried that an it's pretty cool.

It would be awesome if behind a jet's engine, the air would be distorted from the heat.

I could be wrong, so don't hold me to this, but I THINK any FS9 effects will work just fine in FSX. I made an engine fire effect for a fella to use on a "Connie" in FSX. I told him that there weren't any guarantees that it would work, but he said it worked fine.
So yeah, if Nick's effects are the kind you're looking for, give them a shot.

Occasionally, I see effects rotated 90 degrees. Forinstance, the smoke effect for a stunt pane may come off the right wing in FS9, but if you convert to FSX (add thimbnail to texture), the smoke effect looks like it's coming about the length of the right wing above the cockpit.

Yup, you know what, you're right.

Something about the coordinates for the positioning was different.
