Well the helicopter thing, I ain't a heli pilot in reality (though I am thinkin' about it) but I do have some sim experience with it. For your first landings pick a large open area then you can focus on small locations. In level flight however high up, reduce power to idle-20 percent torque or so (This assumes you are in the Bell 206B) and pull up to maintain your altitude, let your speed just dwindle off to zero. As it gets slower you will start to descend. Once it zero's out, level the nose and allow the helicopter to sink. As you get close to the ground add more and more power.
In sims I have flown lots of other crazy approach patterns but this is the easiest and a great place to start.
Pilot for a major US airline certified in the: EMB-120, CRJ, 727, 737, 757, 767, and A-320 and military, T-38, C-130, C-141, and C-5 along with misc. other small airplanes. Any questions, I'm here for you.
