I would say you're definitly not reading too much into it.  Tolkien based Middle-Earth on Great Britain.

The best two maps I can find of Middle-Earth are here:

http://www.taylorcustom.com/localinks/m ... thmap.html

and a clickable version here:

The trick is converting the maps of Middle Earth to DEM and then finding somewhere big enough to put a new continent.  I would suggest that a new install of the FS used and then remove the real world data and put in middle earth data.  The Silmarillion has maps of much more than the later trilogy.  This would be a truley massive project.  I've read throught the SDK on the subject and it is utterly greek to me.  Any help appreciated, and count me in!

I think that until I actually learn scenery design I would be useless.

My point was that they display more of the "world" not just the main continent.  I think that if this is to be done it may as well be done in its entirety(sp?)  and not just the bit from the trilogy.  I first read the books when I was 13, which is 17 years ago.  I bow down to your greater knowledge and wisdom though Pippin as you are substantially older and more grizzled than I ;)

Right.  I've read the SDK's.  I've searched the internet.  I've sat quietly and cried tears of frustration whilst rocking back and forth banging my head against a wall and I still cannot fathom how you write DEM data that the flight sim can understand.

I was planning on starting small and building the Tower of Isengard and putting it in Chicago for Pippin.  I was going to put a Mordor mountain range in the outback.

ie

mmmmmmmmmmm
m---------m---m
m---v----m---m
m-------------m
m-------------
m-------------
m-------------
mmmmm-------
m-------------
m---------------mmmm
m--------------mm
m-------------mm
mmmmmmmmmm

Where M = Mountains and v=Mount Doom -=flatish

I can't, it is currently completely beyond me.  I've no idea where to even start.

Please will someone help me before I need sectioning under the Mental Health Act as a danger to myself and others.

Will

Try building in cfs2, or cfs3 lots of non theatre areas with no airports. And wide open spaces, perhaps a few cities but they are painted onto terrain hexes. if one is in the way plop a volcano on top of it. The graphics for the combat sims are not as good, but the ability to, build missions where you could take part in the "Air" parts of the epic battles, would let you get the most out of the scenery.

Also the scenery design tools are fairly easy to learn most are avalible here at Simviation. FSDS can design and built scenery macros, as well as aircraft.

I had wondered about that too...  CFS2 or 3 would be open ended instead of the whole world being nailed down...

Middle earth is supposed to be based on the Lake District. So just scale that up and put it in a box some where above the pacific.... :P

At the beginning or end of a lot of the old books there are maps. But they are small and in Black and white but they give you a good idea of places.

You have to be careful at Minas Morgul Skyport (KSAU), 'cos those mountains are really hard to negotiate (ask Frodo!)

;D

Also, be careful not to collide with any of those flying Nazguls as I don't think the follow any flight plan...
It sounds strange "Nazgul November 2556 turn left 175 continue own navigation" or "Cessna November 7002 follow Nazgul on final" or "Nazgul November 2556 turn next taxiway"... Ok I will stop now.
