Here's an interesting one

Postby Endlesskevin » Thu Aug 24, 2006 5:04 pm

For the past few weeks I have been struggling to get a model into FS that I made in Gmax.  Since I have not had any luck thus far, I was wondering if anyone is up for a challenge.  Does anyone have the know how and the will to create an absolutley huge mid-air station?  Something that would look similar to a giant space ship with only a couple entrances that lead to a vast, closed, network of interior hangars, cooridors, landing areas, and intertesting fictional scenery placed inside.  Something that would be quite easy to get lost inside once you flown in?  It would be truly gigantic, as in hundreds of miles wide as well as long.  Completely closed and almost a maze with several different levels to explore.  If I could ever get my current model of something I've made which is considerably smaller and less complicated, I'll move onto a project like the one I've just proposed, But I simply can't at the time.  Just thought it would be an interesting challenge to who ever thinks they can create quite an impressive peice of scenery.  Thanks for reading.

By the way, I would love to hear what you think about my idea.  Thanks for your time.

I've had similar ideas before, but up until recently it just wasn't possible to make the landable areas off the ground like that.  But now with Gmax, you can actually do that and it works wonders.  But the problem I encountered that made this kind of project very hard was that the viewable distance that Gmax could create was less than 60,000 meters (196,850 ft), which means that's the limit of how far you can see it.  For small stuff, or even large buildings that doesn't matter.  Usually, by the time you're that far away, it doesn't matter anymore.  But for something hundreds of miles wide (the size of a large island) you would be flying towards it and it would suddenly appear out of nowhere.  Not very realistic, so I never completed any of my projects based around this idea.

Thanks for the tip, but I'm more interested in the inside of this scenery rather than the outside.  I thought it would be a great peice of scenery to spend time exploring tons of small details inside of its huge size.

Any designs you have already?  Specifics?

I have no designs.  Only one thats not really working out too well.  Specifics are a very large (very large) structure floating mid air, maybe about 15,000ft, with seemingly endless huge rooms and cooridors with runways and helipads all over.  Simply a place that may take at least 5 or 10 minutes to navigate to a huge center room.  I think it would be really cool to fly in something like that.  I'd make it myself, but I'm having problems loading them into the game.

What problems?

Gmax issues or something to do with the sim itself?

I'm having troubles getting the model into the game.  I always get an error messege saying that it either failed to work, or that makemdl was not found in the system path.  I've tried to get help through other forums here but I still don't really understand whats wrong.  I wish I could get it too work.  The model I have made that I can't put in the game is similar to the Independence day mothership scenery.  It does not have a main tower protruding from the disc though.  There is an opening in the side that you can fly into.  There are walls placed inside as well as a hole in the ceiling leading to another area above that level.  Back on the outside, there is a "pavilion" so to speak, on the top that is covered.  It's pretty cool but it has no hard surfaces and I can't get it in the game.
