The Quest for Better Textures: freeware packages

Postby FridayChild » Tue May 09, 2006 6:22 am

What do you think of these texture improvement freeware packages?
- Airland 1.0 (runway and taxiway textures)
- Dynamic Water Texture Set (sea and ocean water)
- Inland Water and River Textures 2.0 (river and lake water)
For the water, I am currently using the "morewatr.zip" package, but I'm not happy with it.

I'd tell you what I think, but I don't know where to find any of them.  Give us some links, so's we can check 'em out and let you know our opinions.

- airland1.zip
- pwover16.zip
- aawater2.zip
All of them on www.flightsim.com
I didn't write it before because I thought these packages were well known.

For groud textures try Bluesphere project or Silver Wings and
For ground haze, bluesphere has the best color selection

I'm currently using BlueSphere, but I'd like a package with higher definition rather than one with a different colour nuance.
Silver Wings should be good, but I've read that it's not so good from higher altitudes.
Anyway, I've just installed the above mentioned packages. As soon as possible I'll post my impressions as to if they actually improved my water textures.

For ground textures use Lennarts.  They are great

Get Koorbygen for your Autogen, TreeMod for trees, FSSkyworld for Sky and Clouds

Water I use Ashars, but with effects turned OFF.  Best way to do it, as no stupid circulating "waves" but instead a really realistic flow

I have been able to find Lennart's ground textures, Ashar's water textures and Koorbygen, but not TreeMod or FSSkyWorld.

Also Lennart's textures seem to apply only to "Europe and certain parts of North America and New Zealand".  ???

You can choose to put them onto N. America, S. America, Europe and Oceania I believe. I myself "tweaked" them to make them cover my entire FS globe, and if you want to know how, just say and I'll (try to) remember so I can tell you. ;D
