My experience is that really great advances in Scenery - textures, airports, landclass, you name it - have been made by amateurs and we make great use of them.
Frankly, only a tiny handful of non-commercial aircraft makers, like Milton Shupe, and Mike Stone compete with the commercial add-on makers. Simply because the amount of work needed is enormous, and it needs a team approach. VC, FMS and MCP programming must be hugely demanding - and the audience is very critical.
I don't fly the default heavies, simply because flying a 747 with the default GPS is simply not "as real as it gets". To have a 380 using an aliased default CRJ panel is a nonsense.
Even the first rushed on to the market commercial 380 add-ons were poor (never buy an airplane from Abacus - good scenery but....).
PMDG are about to release their new 747 for FSX - look how much time that has taken. I suspect we will need to wait until next year for a good 380.
