FSX and P3D alike - Desperately Need Helicopters

While Jordan Moore and co - definitely added value by way of their Hovercontrol - these need to be updated - i.e. new models please. FSX and P3D alike both need new helicopters - all the old ones while many work - just look so clownish compared to new versions of other planes added to the hanger. Dauphin, Bell, Military UH101, CH-60 -I'm talking to you... Please someone spend some time on these...and while you are at it.... let's get some more amphibian seaplanes too..... thanks - end rant.

Hey buddy. No disrespect but if you're asking for stuff why don't you try to see how stuff is made, repainted etc? It's a fun hobby and the entry level (basic repainting or modding in some way) doesn't need to be high. A little learning. Lots of tutorials on youtube. Did you just sit as a kid and ask your mom to get food? I certainly hope not. You learned to cook like the rest of us I presume. Same. ;)

As you might tell - my reply is just a little late....I get where you are coming from...I really do - however, I often work 70+ hours a week on contract and rarely have time to even look at my computer for fun stuff. If I ever slow down - I'll do just that. I know I find a few minutes a day to look at all these sim sites for instructions, shared files that will make my time more enjoyable and to post about some things I'd like to see better or whatever - but its still beyond my capabilities to do the creation side of things.

Unfortunately the choice of helicopters in the freeware world is always going to be very limited.
There are not so many aircraft builders out there, and most of them prefer to model airplanes, not copters.
Those who modeled copters made them for FS9 a long time ago. Eagle Rotorcraft Simulation made a few for FSX though, like two or three. If I remember correctly, a B206 with many variants, another smaller copter and a Bell 222. The models look really nice graphically but don't expect anything more complex than the default copters...

On the payware world the situation is not so much brighter, unfortunately. The amount of realistic helicopter addons is extremely small. We're talking about less than five here, and I might still be too optimistic. In fact, I can only remember about the Bell 206 from Dodosim, which is still considered as the only ONE fully realistic copter for FSX, and the newest version of the Huey made by Milviz.
Cerasim make gorgeous helicopter models, including 212, 412, 222 and some Hawk variant I can't remember. But their level of realism, while being higher than default, is not top notch either.
MP Design Studios is another maker you want to look at. They modeled the Gazelle helicopter with quite a high realism level. It's not perfect, but at least they tried to simulate quite a lot of important flight model features (vortex ring state, transitional lift, etc...) and they have a good graphic level as well.
Out of these, Milviz and Nemeth made a few interesting model but once again their realism level (engine management, systems etc....) is limited.

From what I could read on the forum, if you want serious helicopter modelling, especially for the flight model, then DCS is the god-sim. This is where the most realistic copters are found. Unfortunately, there are not so many, if I remember correctly. And the world of DCS is too small.
XPlane also has some serious helicopter modelling. XP11 now offers some very high graphic level, and their physic engine give very good results for helicopters. The default copter in XP11 is far from perfect though, but not bad, especially when you compare it with default FSX/P3D copters :) Once again, payware is what you're looking for, with creators like DreamFoil for example.

I feel your pain...I've gone through the freeware sites looking for copters, only to find less than complete satisfaction. I recently downloaded the Robinson R44 and the Turbine R66 from FSPilotshop. I found them nicely put together, reasonable flying machines and (at least for me) good flying characteristics. Yeah, they're not freeware, but I enjoy copters immensely and these presented a good alternative to the (mostly) military copies available.

updating older Heli's cockpit & instruments wize ain't quite as easy as making a sandwich !!

However, I prefer to use MILVIZ Bell 407 Helicopter and the MILVIZ Hughes 500 Heli highly detailed and fairly up to date / PAYWARE around $30 to $40 bucks I believe.

What are you looking for exactly.... does it have to be native fsx?
If you want a Mi-8, you can try the following link. Warning ahead: every livery has its own model with different antenna an equipment configuration, panels in Russian and a bit buggy, haven't tested with fsuipc installed yet

That's precisely the problem, Ivan: the helicopter models currently available are all very old models, with minor updates to make them compatible with FSX.
The Mi-8 you mentioned was an excellent model back in time. My hangar used to be filled with Vlad's models. But that was 10 years ago or so. Nowadays, there has been little to no evolution at all in the freeware helicopter world, unfortunately. We are still facing the same old models, with various display problems, unrealistic startup procedures, unrealistic engine management, unrealistic instrumentation, etc...

If you compare with freeware GA or warbirds, the situation is much better with these. There has been a lot of new models over the years, using new technologies to make them up-to-date and more realistic, with higher fidelity, better instruments, sometimes even custom gauges to simulate more things than default planes, etc... None of these happened for helicopters. Payware world compensated a little, with a few excellent models... but very, VERY few.

Got the wrong link somehow...this should do the trick. Its FSDS 3.5, so it might work in P3D...
