Don't give up so easily, you guys. Using Gmax is something that took me nearly two years to learn, and I'm still working at it. I haven't even released anything yet, and I've created over 50 different models since I started.
It does seem very daunting as you take your first look at it. All those tools and tricks make it hard to figure out what to do first. But if you look at what documentation is out there, it will make sense.
And Gmax doesn't stop with FS. That's my favorite part about it. You can use Gmax to make models and other stuff for many different games. Take a look at the Gmax website (
http://www.discreet.com/gmax/) to see what you could do with it.
For a few really good tutorials, check out the
Aircraft and 3D Design Forum. Specifically pay attention to the sticky thread "Aircraft and 3D Design FAQs". It will give you some info on how and where to learn gmax. Also check out the FFDS site in my signture. Check their tutorials section.
