Difficulty in upgrading from Airport 2.1 to Airport 2.6 (in WinXP)

Is it me or is it that these older programs are largely a manual operation (something I am unaccustomed to doing)
Could someone point me to a more detailed or more specific (ie "newbie friendly") instruction set, please?
