3 CIVA INS Mod for George Carty's 707-420 panel.

Postby Gary R. » Fri Apr 29, 2005 1:24 pm

I was just wondering if anyone would be able to offer up some suggestions on how to remodel the avionics on George Carty's great 707 panel to accomodate a triple CIVA INS upgrade.  The center area is served by a server gauge package and in order to pull off a mod like that I would need to delete the entire pedistal gauge and install different radios along with the INS CDU's.  Normally I would just do it but I am wondering if other systems on that panel would be adversly effected by going to a different set of gauges over what it was coded with.  Any suggestions or ideas guys?  Thanks.

You don't want to delete that center panel gauge. It does contain
functions for other systems as I recall.

I have a dual CIVA install for that aircraft, I believe. I'll look into
it and post back here once I see what I actually have for sure.

OK....I have a MOD package that will add a Dual CIVA INS installation
to the 707-420 panel ( downview ) as well as a couple of added
NAV instruments to assist in autopilot setting.

The original INS remains intact and active and can be selected for
use as before...set the  autopilot heading control to "Auto".
To have the CIVA INS units control the heading, set the autopilot
heading control to "HDG" and then select the desired CIVA
unit in the upper panel.

Since the CIVA's are way too prone to "random failures, IMO, and
there is no way to save/restore a flight plan, having the "old" INS
available is probably a good choice since it is capable of storing several flight plans.

In any case, here's a screen shot of my installation and if you wish
to use my MODS, then download the 1 MB zip file from my site and read the included documentation.

I will be removing the zip file in a day or two so get it ASAP.

Here's the URL for the file:

http://www.cris.com./~pstrogen/temp/707panel.zip

This file contains only the MODS...not a complete panel.
You must have the George Carty original panel to use these MODS.

Hope this helps.

Okay, I have the mod and thanks a lot.  Sorry it took me a few days to reply, been working tons of OT and very tired.  I hope someday Mr. Carty does an update to his panel that removes the original INS totally and configs for a triple CIVA.  I know what you mean though by having an original INS remaining that isn't quite as realistic.  It's the same deal with the OM Wings L-1011 panel I have which I got in form and is very realistic and extensive but the default INS actually reads the FS flight plan and interfaces with a primitive FMC that was used in the dawn of the FMC revolution.  I have installed a double CIVA in that cockpit but choose to keep the original for back-up.  Mr. Moser the author even went as far as to include an MSU looking switch which must be set to nav to activate the original INS although data entry is not possible from with-in the cockpit.
