How do you open a ".gau" file to explore what gauges are contained in those lump files like Corsair! for example. How can I find out what gauges are contained therein?

Try CfgEdit from the SimV Panel Design section.

As I read the description it doesn't seem to apply to F/S 2k2 though.

It will read .gau files in FS 2002, but not XML. All you need to do is set the FS 2000 path to the FS 2002 path :)

The question was:

The correct term is "cluster" gauges. CfgEdit will read gauges in the conventional GAU format including the cluster type.

FS Panel Studio, the payware version of CfgEdit, can be used to edit XML gauges. http://www.cfgedit.com/
