T6 virtual cockpit guages...

Postby John_Murphy » Tue Nov 04, 2003 10:37 pm

I downloaded a near perfect T-6 Harvard and new textures and it's flying very well.  My problem is that I have the 2-d panel guages restored to ~ 95% (I did make concessions on Collins-type ADF/Nav1/Com1 radios and a combo ADF/Nav1 combo guage -- other than that, guages are pretty much retro).  Is there a tutorial or quick-and-dirty method to get guages/dials/switches into virtual cockpit, or a tutorial on how to do this for dummies like me?  (I'm running FS9)  Thanks.

I downloaded the same aircraft the other day and noticed the same thing. I downloaded the FS2002 T6 and was able to find the same panel with the DVC gauges listed.

Add this near the bottom of your panel.cfg file:

[Vcockpit01]
Background_color=0,0,0
size_mm=512,512
position=7
visible=0
ident=
pixel_size=512,512
texture=$panel

gauge00=p47d!Altimeter,  119,316,64
gauge01=p47d!Attitude,  238,240,85
gauge02=p47d!Boost_Pressure,  292,408,70
gauge03=p47d!Clock,  36,376,40
gauge04=p47d!Engine_Temperature,  353,344,58
gauge05=p47d!Fuel_Warning,  372,437,20
gauge06=p47d!Heading_Indicator,  176,226,65
gauge07=p47d!Oil_Pressure,  222,407,70
gauge08=p47d!Tachometer,  296,343,58
gauge09=p47d!Turn_Indicator,  182,344,58
gauge10=p47d!Vertical_Speed,  240,343,58
gauge11=f6f3_hellcat!Compass,  112,244,65
gauge12=f4u1a_corsair!Ignition,  48,413,60
gauge13=DHasi_mph,  62,316,60
gauge14=10E-oil-temp1,  409,353,50

Thanks, Andrew.  I'll try this, but I have a heck-uv-a-lot more guages, most of them from the f4f hellcat.  It's too bad nobody makes a virtual panel maker -  [hint to Chuck Dome]

You can use CfgEdit to modify the DVC entries.

Hagar, forgive the dumb question, but is the CfgEdit located on CoF disks or where?

John. CfgEdit is an excellent freeware panel design application. You can download it from the Panel Design section on this site. It won't read the latest XML gauges but this isn't a problem if you're familiar with manually editing Panel.cfg.

Foo, I'm reworking the virtual cockpit to accept working guages, have given T6 full retro guages (except for combo ADF/omni guage and radios), strobes, white nav light on rudder and two "rotating beacons" [one on tail fin, the other on belly], and US Army and US Navy textures.  My Dad was a Flight Instructor after his tour of duty during the early part of WW II was cut short because of malaria, so I'm extremely glad to find a great T6 and textures -- just wish the bird had landing gear doors and pitot tube visible from "spot plane" & "tower" view.  Next, I've got to figure best way to upload my mods to this fine bird.  I'll get back to you about plane and textures, ok?  - John

Hagar, thanks for the heads-up.  It would be nice if somebody would figure out how to read where guages are in 2D and place them (or let designer "drag and drop") guages in same positions that they are in the 2D windows ... (sigh)  Oh well, I'm gonna give it best shot.  Again, thanks. - John

John. This is exactly what CfgEdit is all about. http://www.cfgedit.com/index-cfgedit.html
The DVC is configured slightly differently to the actual 2D panel but this should make what you're doing so much easier..

  Again, thanks for the tip -- I bought the FS Panel Designer (the commercial version of CfgEdit, which supports FS9 CoF) a few weeks ago, and have been learning it since.  When I realized they were the same product, I dropped their support link a line asking about Dynamic Virtual Cockpits and their product.  Keep you posted if you want.  - John

Ah OK. I didn't realise you already have FS Panel Studio. As you say, it's CfgEdit's big brother which I assume has much the same features. In this case it should read those DVC windows. I thought this was what you wanted to do.

PS. Here's how a typical DVC window displays in CfgEdit.
Image
All DVCs will vary to some extent. Some are created from just one window while this one covers 2 separate windows which overlap in the centre. I would think this would be all you need to reposition or replace gauges. For more accuracy use the background & position of the gauges displayed in CfgEdit (or FS Panel Studio) to work out the area covered by the DVC window. Then create a temporary background BMP from a screenshot of the DVC to use as a template.

Hi, Hagar, thought you guys might want to see a comparison view of how my first Virtual vs 2D panel looks like for the T6 looks like.

Assumiing you uploaded the image to the server in the correct size & format you need to paste the full path to the image in between the [img][/img ] brackets with no spaces. This would be the path for an imaginary image named mypic.jpg.

Somewhat dumb question:  What's the maximum kb/format?

BTW, many thanks to all as the T-6 Harvard now has a fully instrmented, working virtual cockpit.  Still some minor bugs to work out re: detail and placement, but both Virtual and 2D cockpits are as close as I can make them - or will be once the bugs are finally worked out.
