Installing a new airport in FS9

Postby Springer6 » Sun Dec 31, 2006 1:42 pm

Help,

I'm at the end of my thether !

I have created an airport ( Martlesham Heath in Suffolk, pre war test centre for Spitfire amongst many others) I tried using AFCAD, but could not get rid of the autogen scenery ( FS9 trees and buildings ) within the airfield and on the runway. I then tried an exclude and flatten area using FSSC, but this just got rid of the AFCAD airfield and left the autogen intact.
I then tried adding an exclude area to my FS9 Scenery config file. This got rid of the autogen stuff , but also every other scenery item from FSSC or AFCAD.

What am I doing wrong??? I know I could set autogen to minimum , but this is not a real answer.

OK this is what I have found through massive  trial, much frustration and error.

First of all I was making a mistake when using FSSC . I found that it is really essential to check your destination folder is set correctly every time , before  exporting the file ( It seems to change settings by itself).

Secondly , even if you don't include an exclude area in FSSC the programme still creates one ! You need to go into your Add on scenery airport scenery folder and delete the excl.bgl every time . If you don't do this a large area around any runway created is totally excluded ( no autogen for miles around) If you delete the excl folder, the act of  creating a runway excludes autogen for a reasonable distance around any runway and flattens the area also. If you use the specific exclude feature in FSSC it seems to exclude absolutely everything!!

The way I have now created my grass  pre WW2 airfield is to install a couple of FSSC runways with the textures set to "invisible" ( the grass textures in Fssc don't change with the seasons and look terrible). These invisible runways  flatten the site and get rid of autogen in the immediate area . I ensure that I manually delete any exclbgl automatically created by FSSC remember. I have then installed grass runways via AFCAD ( these are semi transparent and do change with the seasons).

This method is probably not the "correct " method , but it seems to work for now.

You can use AFCAD and FSSC together (well i did for my RAF Leeming V1) but the excludes were a nightmare  :P and I am sure that was with FS2002.

If you are working in FS9 can I suggest you consider not using FSSC as it does has significant draw backs.  I use AFCAD, Gmax, Obplacer, Sbuilder as the main combination of programs and use ExbuilderV2 for exlcudes as it is so simple to use.  There are other methods but this is simple and and takes little learning. :)
