Creating new airport scenery

Postby jlvandem » Thu Sep 14, 2006 8:59 pm

I was just wondering if it's possible to use GMAX to create an airport for FS2002... what I'm asking is can I just create the entire airport in GMAX then somehow just use the makemdl.exe to export it to FS2002? I've looked into using FS Scenery Creator but I don't like the runway and taxiway textures that it uses. If this is possible is there a tutorial anywhere describing things like designating surfaces as runways or taxiways? Any explinations of how this can be done if it can be done would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

GMAX is an object designer. It's great for things like buidings but i would recommend AFCAD for the runways etc. That way you can add AI to your airport. The help file shows how do it all and the fault finder will tell you if it's AI ready.

Will afcad all you to do the actual scenery of the runways and such? And will it allow me to define my own textures for the runways? I"m not trying to create a new airport I'm trying to redo an already existing airport. Kellogg/Battle Creek to be exact (KBTL). Also some runways have varying surfaces so I'd like to be able to show that as well. If somebody could lead me in the right direction as of how to go about this that'd be awesome. Thanks!

Looked into AFCAD a bit. It seems it won't work with FS2002. I'm looking to create a scenery for FS2002. Thanks!

You can use gmax to do a whole airport but it has its problems (see link to post at UKSD below)

http://www.ukscenerydesign.co.uk/forum/ ... .php?t=396

I decided just to accept the limitations of AFCAD because it is easy to use and enables the use of AI for people who download the scenery you create.  AFCAD should be fine in FS2002 (i used it for FS2002 in the past) but make sure you have the correct version.  Not sure which one is right for FS2002 but should not take much to find out.

Afcad v1.4.0 for FS2002.

The description from the SimV download site:

AFCAD v1.4.0 Author: Lee Swordy This is a CAD-style editor for airport facility data. You can create new parking, modify taxiways, add ATC to airports that don't already have it, create new airport facilities from scratch, and other things. It can't change the visual elements of an airport, just the maps and data that AI and ATC use to operate at airports, and the information that appears in you Map View and GPS windows. 735K

So according to this I can't use AFCAD to make an FS2002 scenery... I'm not too concerned about the easiest way to do it. I just want a very nice finished product. Thanks.

Ok I'm sorry about being so annoying about this. I figured out by trying AFCAD 1.4 out that it will indeed do 2D modifying of airports. I've also figured out that FS Scenery will after all allow me to produce a more realistic airport as it allows me to set different textures and such for the ground. I suppose this is how I'm gonna go about it. Thanks for everyone's help. Hopefully I'll have some pictures of progress going up soon. The plan is to recreate as best as possible Kellogg (KBTL) airport as it is the airport I'm currently flying out of with Western Michigan College of Aviation. Hopefully I'll have some pictures of progress going up soon.

Ok haha played with AFCAD 1.4 and it cannot change visual aspects of scenery after all. That's ok I've figured out how I'm gonna go about all of this now by playing with different things. Thanks again.
