Creating rivers?

Postby Skligmund » Thu Dec 23, 2004 6:09 am

O.K.

I want to create the Kenai River in Kenai, AK.

1. Is this possible?
2. Is this entirely too difficult?
3. Which programs should I use for this task?
4. Anything else I should know?

Here is a quick overview/map of the river:

http://www.dnr.state.ak.us/parks/units/kenrvmap.htm
MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum
Athlon64 3700+ San Diego (2200) @ 2750 MHz
1024MB PC3200 @ 500 MHz (Mushkin V2)
GeForce 6800GT OC (BFG)
(2) 80G SATA Seagates RAID0
(1) Maxtor 250Gb 16MB Cache ATA133

I have been using Coastline Maker for the last week and completed six projects so far. I highly recommend it.

Hi there,

great project idea!

I'd recommend Ground2K4 by Christian Fumey and here's how I'd proceed:

1. Install USAPhotoMaps - http://jdmcox.com/ - and use it to download TerraServer topo maps of your area of interest

2. Create georeferenced jpg files with the BigJpeg 2.5 utility available at the same site

3. Re-project the jpg files to the FS-native lat/long projection using the tools and methods outlined in this thread: http://forums.avsim.net/dcboard.php?az= ... ype=search

4. Use the created bmp file as a 8-bit background image in Gorund2K4 and start drawing. Aside from adding the water you can also underly it with gravel bar textures and improve on the surrounding land class, never mind adding streams, trails, and roads.

Without wanting to negatively impact your creative energy here's a link to some upcoming commercial scenery that will, I believe, include the Kenai peninsula: http://www.georender.com/

Cheers, Holger
