on thing i've noticed is that generally, when a plane is backlit, the textures tend to look flat and two dimentional.....without roundness, form or shine or whatever..don't know the words to use to describe......it must be a challenge to overcome this, since i see it so often.....am i the only one noticing this?

I don't know which sim you use or which aircraft, but I have FS.9 and it doesn't happen with anything I have on. :-/

A screenshot might help :)

Yes, it is a challenge, but it is done occasionally. It involves very detailed textures, subtle bumpmapping and careful use of the spec files that FSX supports, but these are hardly ever implemented.
Look at the latest A2A P-47, that has all the shine and shape that I would like to see, but then Martin Catney, the man who designs their textures is a genius in my opinion...

John Terrell did a great job on his P-51B as well I think:
