Would it be possible to use the default ground textures as a base for some sort of camo?

you could use the most common summer, winter, fall, and spring textures.

Yes I think so, this should be possible, but with much overworking in the paint programs as you want camo-style lines between to 3D model parts, and no graphical aliased "lines"
