California Classics has a lot to say about alpha channels (search the page for 'alpha') on their Repaint Page(s).

also . . .

Much can be learned by viewing existing alpha channels from installed FS9 aircraft after opening them in DXTbmp.

I couldnt agree more with wji here. I figured out alpha channels just by looking at the other aircraft, basically on 't' textures, the alpha channel represents reflections or general shiny-ness. The darker the shade of grey, the more reflective the part will be. Ie black = chrome, white = matt

On 'l' or as I call them, night time textures, the alpha channel represents lighting effects, black appering unlit on the a/c and white appearing illuminated. Its a great tip to just play around with these effects and see the results. Putting some light grey smudges on the top side of the wings in an appropriate place makes awesome looking light patches from windows on jets
